About Film
Normally this would be the space where I’d give a small plot description of the movie, but I’m not going to do that this time. Doing so would reveal too much as the movie has so many immediate twists and turns. Going in not knowing much is the best option here, and I hope that will be preserved for most people. The promotion was really careful at not giving too much away, so it would be a shame to have it all spoiled now.
The story takes place in three distinct acts. The first is good, the second is less so (but still not bad), and the third is phenomenal. The overarching story in the three acts is very strong, but there are moments where the writing suffers. In particular, there are some lines of dialogue that are rough, and many of the characters are paper thin. Many of them are walking clichés: Ken Watanabe plays a Japanese scientist that delivers big, cheesy lines about the fate of society, Sally Hawkins plays a female scientist that reacts to Watanabe’s, and Elizabeth Olsen plays the wife of star Aaron Taylor-Johnson and spends more time acting scared than giving lines. Only Taylor-Johnson’s character has a true arc, and that’s a little problematic.
As the film goes on, it starts to care less and less about the human characters and more on Godzilla and the MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) that are wreaking havoc. It would be easy to point to this as a flaw of the film, to say time spent building up characters only to ignore them was time wasted, but that would be missing the whole point. I think what screenwriter Max Borenstein is showing here is that in huge disasters, individual human life is insignificant in the grand scheme of what is going on in the moment. Even in disaster humans are incredibly selfish, but it really doesn’t matter what we want in a situation like this. This is where the flawed script is at its best.
The characters may be thin and the dialogue may be cheesy, but the cast they got to fill those characters is nothing to scoff at. Some of the roles are insignificant enough where it’s a surprise that they got as big of actors to fill them as they did, like Oscar nominated Sally Hawkins for example. Having her fill that role didn’t add anything special to the movie, but having a lesser actor certainly could have taken something away, so I think having this caliber of cast to fill those roles was the smart choice.
Where the film truly shines though is in Edwards’ directing. He is clearly borrowing from Spielberg and did a great job of making Godzilla feel like an old summer blockbuster while still feeling incredibly new. The movie made reference to several of Spielberg’s biggest movies like Jurassic Park, Jaws, and especially Close Encounters of the Third Kind a movie it feels very similar to in certain spots. Edwards also uses a large number of Spielberg techniques like reaction shots of kids faces, the way the monsters enter in the screen, the delay of getting to see what we came for, and the real surprise when we ultimately do get to see Godzilla as there’s no way to see it coming.
The number of breathtaking shots in the movie is astounding. There are at least 30 shots that you’d want to hang on your wall, and that’s probably a low number. Edwards clearly knows what he’s doing here, but equal credit must be given to cinematographer Seamus McGarvey (who also shot The Avengers) as it appears to be a fruitful teaming. It’s also helpful that the CGI used in the film is top notch. Everything looks really impressive. Usually people will notice what looks bad in a movie, but nothing here looks unrealistic enough where it’s an issue.
I won’t claim to be the world’s biggest Godzilla expert as I’ve seen little more than the original Japanese film, but even I can see that the references to at least some of the other films in the franchise were expertly chosen and will give fans a big smile. These references will also work for those who don’t know them, that is, they’re awesome whether you know they’re from a different chapter or not.
Godzilla deserves to be as big as its titular character, and it’s a step in the right direction for summer blockbusters. If more of them can follow in the vein of feeling like summer blockbusters from the ’70s through the ’90s with a technology upgrade, it’ll be a very exciting time. If only Gareth Edwards is able to pull off movies like this, at least there is somebody working right now that is able to. His debut of Monsters may have been a much smaller budget movie, but it shows that Godzilla is no fluke.
